Hermes Torres is an artist, educator, and mystic with a true passion for the arts. Born and raised in New York City to Puerto Rican parents, he has dedicated much of his life to exploring the intersection of art and spirituality.  In addition to his artistic endeavors, Hermes was an integral part of the Fashion Institute of Technology community for over thirty years and shared his knowledge and experience with the next generation of artists.

His work reflects a deep connection to the universe and his belief in the power of creativity to transform lives. His art celebrates color, texture, and pattern, and his travels influence his unique style.

Hermes has exhibited his work in galleries nationally and internationally. Hermes seeks to bridge the gap between the physical and the spiritual through his art, teaching, and spiritual practice, creating a space for others to explore and connect with their inner selves.

Artist Statement

My involvement in dance, martial arts and metaphysics inform my paintings with particular attention to space, color, texture, movement and emotive gesture.

Inspiration can come from various sources, such as visions, colors, memories, words, music, choreography, objects, physical sensations, or emotions. Once I internalize this inspiration, it may simmer briefly or gestate silently before taking form.

I remain in a fluid state of being, present to the directional impulse of the inspiration. I usually work on several pieces concurrently. The dialogue that transpires between the works in progress compels my subconscious to investigate how to best translate spiritual vocabulary through artistic form.

In my art, I frequently incorporate elements that have been discarded, holding memories and energetic imprints of their passage through time. By doing so, I honor the past's ancestral connection and give it a new life in a different form.

As the creator, I breathe new life into overlooked objects, supporting their growth in power.
