In many cultures, spiritual icons and relics are passed down from generation to generation, amplifying their energetic and spiritual presence. I see my art as a way to continue this tradition, to honor the past and bring forth the memories and imprints of past lives. Each piece I create becomes an icon, a relic of the ancestral wisdom and stories that I am privileged to interpret and share.

 

The process of my work is slow and deliberate, a meditation, a prayer, a ceremony, a ritual. It is a way for me to listen to the whispers of my African, European, and Indigenous ancestors, each with their own visual voice and vocabulary. Through their guidance, I am able to problem solve and find the expression that best represents their story through me.

 

As I continue to work on this ongoing conversation, the project evolves and grows, as the voices and impressions of the ancestors guide me towards completion. I use what is available, discarded materials that hold their own ancestral imprints. They become a part of the story, a part of the legacy that I am honored to carry forward.

 

Legado Ancestral is not just a series or a story.  It is a reminder of the power and beauty that lies in the past, and the importance of acknowledging and honoring our ancestral connections. Through my art, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own ancestral legacies and find meaning and strength in the wisdom of those who came before us.
